Pepito & The Trash Cans

A Bilingual Musical Adventure of Hope, Creativity, and Cultural Pride

“Pepito & The Trash Cans” is a heartwarming, bilingual musical storytelling experience that transports audiences to the hills of Bolivia, where a young boy named Pepito longs to play music—but scarcity and hardship stand in the way of his dream. With the help of his siblings and boundless imagination, Pepito discovers the joy of creating music from what others throw away—transforming bottles, cans, and other repurposed materials into real instruments.

Told through a lively mix of Spanish and English, this interactive performance helps audiences build Spanish vocabulary through context and repetition, while also fostering cultural appreciation and pride—especially for Hispanic students. As the story unfolds, live music played on homemade instruments brings the world of Pepito to life in a way that is both educational and unforgettable.

Perfect for school assemblies, library programming, and family theatre audiences, Pepito & The Trash Cans promotes:

  • Environmental awareness through creative reuse

  • Social-emotional learning with a focus on perseverance and sibling teamwork

  • Musical inspiration using rhythm, sound, and innovation

  • Cultural celebration grounded in Bolivian roots

Performed by Luke, an engaging storyteller and musician, who lived in Bolivia for 15 years. This show is an uplifting reminder that even in the face of scarcity, the human spirit—and a little rhythm—can turn trash into treasure.

Wild Roads & Wonderous Tales

From Around the World

Luke Vandergriff doesn’t just tell stories—he lives them. After spending 15 years in Bolivia and traveling through 18 countries, Luke has collected a treasure trove of true tales: getting deported, falling for clever tourist scams, tasting bizarre food, and performing for audiences as diverse as Sudanese refugees in Egypt and fire-stricken communities in the Bolivian Chiquitanía.

Whether recounting border crossings gone wrong or moments of unexpected kindness in the most unlikely places, Luke’s storytelling is raw, uplifting, and deeply human. His performances blend humor, heart, and a dash of chaos—reminding us all that even in the strangest moments, there’s always a story worth telling.
